Finnan hopes for international happiness

Steve Finnan admits he ended his international retirement because he could not resist the lure of another World Cup finals tournament.

The 32-year-old Liverpool full-back was persuaded to return to the big stage by new Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni, who moved swiftly after his appointment to begin the process of enticing him back into the fold.

Where Bolton defender Andy O'Brien declined and Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland is yet to give an answer, the opportunity to relive the thrills of the 2002 World Cup finals was the deciding factor for Finnan.

He said: "Yes, definitely. There's no doubt I would like to go to a major tournament - I haven't been for a few years and that appeals to anyone.

"The disappointments of the last few tournaments, that's in the back of your head, and you would love to go to another World Cup.

"I was fortunate enough to go in 2002, so that enticed me to come back.

"The chance of playing in another World Cup took me back and when I met the manager, I felt it was right."

Finnan could win his 51st cap against Norway on Wednesday night after missing just three games since completing a half-century.

However, he would do so with his future at club level swathed in uncertainty.

He is yet to figure for Liverpool this season, even on the bench, and has been mentioned as a possible makeweight in the ongoing Gareth Barry saga.

Finnan is aware of the speculation and admits he does not know what the next couple of weeks might hold for him.

Asked about the Barry rumours, he said: "Limbo sounds about right, yes.

"I haven't got a clue, to be honest with you. I haven't played many games recently, so I honestly can't say.

"There is a big squad there and everyone is fighting for their place, and I just have to train well and take the chance if I get it."

Pressed on whether he is contemplating a move away from Anfield, he added: "You would have to ask the club. I have been trying to get into the team.

"I haven't played but I will just wait and see and when the transfer window closes, we will know then.

"I will wait and see if I can get into the team. If not, then obviously I want to play, so we will just have to take it from there."
